BMX Resto Mod?

This is the pile of parts I've been lumping around for almost 25 years that I've finally decided to do something with. It's a 1979 Mongoose Supergoose with a pair of Skyway Tuff II's of a similar vintage. It was my friend's bike back when we were in middle school, before we were old enough to drive.

Now that I've decided to do something with it, the next question is what should that something be? Should I go the "concours" route and source OEM stuff like a pair of Motomag rims? Or should I build it the way I would have back in the day if I had the money?

Build it the way you'd want it. I'll never get rid of my high school bike, a DK Rage. Too many good memories with it.

build it to be ridden, but however you want.

my daily ride is an '04 haro nyquist r1 with 36/9 drive (sometimes 44/9 if i'm staying on pavement) and a buddy left me an awesome fatboy to build up as wall art.

A testament to the last time I did anything with this bike. Way back I was in National Guard, and during my first annual training I found that the base we trained on had a BMX track. I had plans of tossing the bike in a truck for the next summer camp and shredding, so I camoed the seat.

Alas, we started going to Fort Dix instead, and by the time we went back to the other place I had cannibalized the bike to make a set of heavier duty brakes for my buddy's wheelchair. He crashed his car just we graduated, breaking his neck. One of the reasons I ended up with the bike.

Ridden by someone, but not me. Nothing more pathetic than an out of shape 40-something on a BMX bike. Perhaps for my daughter.

Period correct! Modified since that's what you would have done back then. I just finished up a 78 Le Tour III resto, got unsolicited offers the first time I went out and sold it within the month. Folks like old things.

Awesome! This is my Dad's 1982 (?) Redline MX-II, which he raced on dirt at 14. We still have it!

Everything you see is stuff he did as a kid, (bigger cranks, tires, etc.) but I also used it. I would often ride it and didn't want to change a thing until after 2 years I threw in the towel and got a seat. The old seat was 1 piece of hard plastic, (not comfortable at all) because he made it as light as possible for racing!

Sweet ride. I had a Redline in '84-'85. Right up until the time I started high school. Then I sold it to buy my first car.

We rode our bikes to school in junior high school, and exactly one day of high school. In the course of one summer we went from being the cool kids on our BMX bikes to losers who didn't have cars. I sold my Redline as soon as I got my license.
